Chilled Beams superior to Fan Coils concerning energy consumption
There is no doubt about Chilled Beams being energy efficient. The technology has been
available since the 1970:s and since then frequently used in public buildings
with great success. Parallel to Chilled Beams one of the most common systems
for indoor climate control of public buildings is Fan Coils. The Fan Coils have
recently been equipped with more energy efficient motors of EC-type. So how do
the systems perform in a comparison today concerning energy consumption?
In an independent study carried out by EDSL (Environmental Design Solutions Ltd.)
passive and active Chilled Beams systems were compared to VAV Fan Coils
equipped with EC-motors. The comparison is based on four different building
types located in London and Birmingham.
The result of the study shows that Active Chilled Beams are approximately 22% more energy
efficient than VAV Fan Coils equipped with EC-motors. Minimizing energy
consumption is of course important both for environmental reasons and for
economic reasons. By choosing a Chilled Beam system sustainability as well as
economy will gain long term advantages.
