BRITS LOVE CHRISTMAS GET TOGETHERS BUT THEY’LL HAVE THEIR FAIR SHARE OF FESTIVE DISASTERS TOO!

50% of Brits say the thing they look forward to most on Christmas Day is spending time with their family and they voted their top three festive activities as watching movies, playing board games and family walks, according to new research from leading insurer, Allianz Your Cover.

Unfortunately, the survey of 2,000 householders also revealed that one in five householders has experienced a Christmas Day disaster and 44% of those said it ‘ruined their day’. Allianz Your Cover found that the most common problems encountered over the festive holiday are:

• Burst pipes and water leaks (24%)
• Illness (21%)
• Power cuts (13%)
• Burning the Christmas Dinner (12%)
• Burglaries (9%)

Jon Lott, Allianz Your Cover, comments: "In the event that something goes wrong on Christmas day, it’s worth having a list of emergency contact numbers to hand. Households with insurance should check to see if they have home emergency cover, so that in the event of a heating, plumbing or electricity crisis, they can call their insurer to receive immediate advice and support."

When asked what their favourite presents were, men said that gadgets were their favourite Christmas present with iPads, tablets and phones topping the list, but for women, the best present they could receive is jewellery.

Other survey findings include:

• 43% of householders will not exchange Christmas cards with neighbours and only 20% will spend time with neighbours over the festive season
• 30% of people plan to have their first Christmas tipple before midday
• ‘It’s a wonderful life’ is the most popular Christmas movie (15%), while the worst Christmas film of all time was voted ‘Christmas with the Kranks’ (20%).

Jon Lott adds: "It’s fantastic that so many people look forward to the festive season and enjoy spending time with their loved ones. The majority of people will have a great time this Christmas, but for those do experience of a household disaster, their insurer may well be able to save the day!"
