Brunel Launches Institute for Contemporary Middle-Eastern Music - Inaugural Concert 06 July
Uxbridge, London– 30 June 2011– Brunel University today announces the creation of the Brunel Institute for Contemporary Middle-Eastern Music, which will be launched by the Rt. Hon Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean at an inaugural event and concert at LSOSt Luke’s on Wednesday 6th July.
The Institute will house a unique archive, profiling the work of 100 Middle Eastern composers and promoting the performance of works that are unknown not just in the UK but across the world. It will also establish an important focus for further research into Middle Eastern music. The Institute will be directed for Brunel by Professor Peter Wiegold, in association withMiddle East music specialist Oliver Butterworth.
Forming part of the Mayor of London’s Shubbak festival of Arab culture (4-24 July), the Institute’s inaugural concert will comprise definitive performances of fourUK and three world premieres, including works especially written for the occasion. The concert will involve both Middle Eastern and Western musicians playing together in what will be a landmark collaboration of diverse, but complementary traditions.
The celebrated Egyptian composer Amr Okba, who will be speaking at the launch of the new Institute, reflects: “At a time of remarkable political and social change across the Arab world,Brunel University is pioneering an important dialogue between the West and theMiddle East through contemporary music and establishing a valuable resource for nurturing this pivotal relationship.”

Acclaimed contemporary ensemble, notes inégales, directed by Peter Wiegold, is joined by traditional Middle Eastern musicians and the Egyptian singer Merit Ariane Stephanos in world premières of music by Kareem Roustom (Syria), Zaid Jabri (Syria), and Peter Wiegold, with UK premières of music by Halim El Dabh (Egypt), Özkan Manav (Turkey), Bushra El Turk (Lebanon) and Samir Odeh-Tamimi (Palestine/Israel)
