BT Apprentice provides work inspiration for Cardiff pupils

Press Release   •   Jul 16, 2013 00:00 BST

Youngsters from two Cardiff schools have been given some work inspiration at an event run by one of BT’s own apprentices.

Nineteen Year 10 pupils from Radyr and Llanishen schools attended a week-long Work Inspiration workshop run by 23-year-old engineering apprentice Bryony Mullins from Thornhill.

At the end of the course the pupils were handed their completion certificates by Cardiff West AM Mark Drakeford at an event at BT’s Stadium House offices in Park Street, Cardiff.

The pupils were taught the essential life skills required to make the transition from school to the work place including interview techniques, presentation skills and developing a good CV.

Bryony, who was in her second year at Cardiff law school before deciding instead to opt for a career in engineering with BT’s local network business, Openreach, said: “It’s all about making an informed choice of career and making sure students are prepared as well as possible for when the time comes to find work.

“I wanted a career where I could combine theory with the hands on experience of learning and it’s great to be able to pass on some of my knowledge to these students. They were attentive and a pleasure to work with.”
Bryony, an apprentice service technician living in Rhiwbina, joined BT in 2011. Her work includes installing and repairing copper and fibre lines and looking at ways to improve broadband speeds.

Mark Drakeford, AM for Cardiff West, said: “It is vitally important that pupils have the opportunity to experience work inspiration schemes in the wider education and learning curriculum. With apprenticeships being essential to the Welsh economy, it is pleasing to see BT offering support in this area, especially as the workshop is being run by a BT apprentice”.

In the last year more than 400 students from schools and colleges throughout Wales have taken part in BT’s Work Inspiration programme which started in 2010.

Another 14 Work Inspiration events are planned around Wales before the end of the year.
