Canal boat feature adopted by community groups

The canal boat feature that had recently been removed from Radcliffe town centre is now proudly back in its rightful position on Water Street thanks to the help and support of local community groups.

The council has had to scale back its ‘in bloom’ measures due to the need to cut a further £12 million from its budget, but Little Britain Anglers have stepped in to ensure that this local landmark continues to flourish.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, said: “It’s great news that community groups have stepped in to look after the canal boat feature. Reducing the funding available does not mean that Radcliffe will no longer bloom: we will continue to encourage and support volunteers and businesses to get involved across Radcliffe.”

Eric Owen, chair of Little Britain Anglers, said: “Our groups of volunteers are delighted to be working in partnership with Bury council, B & Q and other groups including Radcliffe Incredible Edible and AJ Academy for disabled adults to restore the canal boat feature and look after the planting so that it can bloom in Radcliffe for the future. Our groups of volunteers are keen to get going on this new project.”

Although Radcliffe will not enter the North West in Bloom competition this year, the council is keen to hear from volunteers who would like to develop a refreshed in-bloom campaign led by the community.
