Big rise in tourists flocking to Bury

Bury’s feast of attractions is drawing in visitors like never before, according to the latest figures.

The number of stays in hotels and guest houses in the borough during 2012 increased by 19%, while visitor spend in rose from £289 million to £302 million. There was also a 3% increase in the number of people employed in tourism activity, up to 4,074.

The data has been released as part of the latest STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor) report – which is commissioned each year by Visit Manchester, the tourist board for Greater Manchester

Councillor Jane Lewis, cabinet member for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “These figures show just how popular Bury is, with visitors coming here from far and wide. We’ve got a lot to offer, from Bury Market to the East Lancashire Railway, the Fusilier Museum and Bury Transport Museum, shopping and leisure on The Rock and Mill Gate, and a new Premier Inn, plus Bury Art Gallery and Museum.

“When you add in our food and drink offer, countryside, which includes 12 Green Flag parks, and a growing number of events then we’ve really got something for everyone, and we look forward to welcoming many more visitors to our borough in future.”

** A new guide to visitor attractions in Bury town centre is now available to pick up from Bury’s Tourist Information Centre, Fusilier Museum, Moss Street.
