Could you turn a former library into a valued community asset?

Local groups can formally bid to run community services from a number of library buildings that are due to close.

Bury Council is inviting organisations, charities and not-for-profit groups to formally apply to take over the running of the following library buildings:

  • Coronation Road Community Centre and Library
  • Dumers Lane community Centre and Library
  • Topping Fold Community Centre and Library
  • Tottington Library
  • Unsworth Library
  • Whitefield Library and Adult Learning Centre

How do I apply and when?

To apply to run a community asset you will need to submit a formal expression of interest and a business plan.

  • Expressions of interest need to be submitted between Friday 1 September and Monday 2 October 2017.
  • Business plans must be submitted by Friday 17 November 2017.
  • Following a successful business plan the council will draw up appropriate contracts with a view to assets being allocated to community groups by the end of this calendar year.

Where can I get help with the application process?

A detailed guide is now available online and at libraries.This will provide advice on a wide range of practical issues, such as:

  • how much funding you will need and where to get it;
  • how to apply for charitable status;
  • finding capable and skilled volunteers;
