Local firm to refurbish Radcliffe Market

Bury contractors H.H. Smith and Sons have won the contract to carry out a £1 million refurbishment of Radcliffe Market.

Work is due to start this month (April) on significant internal and external improvements to the Market Hall, and be completed in November in time for Christmas trading.

Councillor Mike Connolly, leader of Bury Council, said: “Following the successful opening of the temporary market on Radcliffe Piazza, the council is delighted to be working with H.H. Smith on the major refurbishment of the Market Hall. As a local contractor, Smiths will not only deliver a modern and vibrant new market but will do so using local jobs and labour. Radcliffe Market occupies a very prominent and important position this is the latest stage of our ambitious plans to regenerate and revitalise Radcliffe town centre.”

David Smith, managing director of H.H. Smith and Sons, added: ''After being awarded work at Bury Market, it is especially pleasing to win the Radcliffe Market project.  Our close association with Bury Council has guaranteed work for our staff who all reside in the borough and are regular customers at both the markets. It also gives us the opportunity to train our next crop of apprentices who will be the latest in a long line of local talent recruited and residing in the Bury area.”
