Africa Oyé team up with CALM for the 5th year running

Organisers of the free Africa Oyé festival in Liverpool are delighted to announce CALM as their charity partner again for 2014, for the fifth consecutive year.

Paul Duhaney, Artistic Director of Africa Oyé said:

“Africa Oyé is proud to work with CALM once again in 2014. The work that
they do to tackle male suicide in the UK is vitally important and we’re delighted that our festival can provide them with a platform to reach the varied demographics that make up our wonderful audience. We hope that we can continue this partnership for many years to come.”

CALM seeks to promote the work we do through enjoyable and accessible events, such as at Africa Oyé, held in Sefton Park on the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of June. Africa Oyé and CALM are proud to be charity partners once again, with this special relationship enabling us to reach men in the local community in Merseyside and spread our supportive message.

Simon Howes, CALM Merseyside Development Coordinator said:

“For us, Oyé is a magical weekend, celebrating African music and culture, whilst helping us spread the message that being silent isn’t being strong. With suicide being the biggest single killer of men under 50, it’s essential we reach our local communities – thank you Oyé for helping us do that!”

Africa Oyé, the UK’s largest free celebration of African music and culture takes place annually in Liverpool. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength to strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002 to cope with demand.

With too many negative representations of Africa entrenched in images of war, disease, poverty and famine, Africa Oyé seeks to redress the balance and highlight the fantastic range of cultures, foods, music and artists that make this great continent one of the most vibrant and inspiring in the world.

Finley Quaye will headline the festival on the Sunday night and is joined over the festival weekend by an eclectic mix of artists.
