Press release -

Bristows achieves grade A BRC rating

Following investment and renovations to the Bristows of Devon factory, the business was recently given an outstanding BRC A-rating, having previously only ever having attained a respectable B. Purchase of new equipment means that boiled sweets are now back in production and the business is well positioned to export to 32 countries. Also new is the production of toffee, fudge and honeycomb inclusions for ice cream and cakes.

The company is also welcoming master confectioner Andy James back to Bristows as factory manager in July. With over 25 years of confectionery making experience and a history with the company when he managed the Pollards brand site, Andy is sure to increase the pace of improvement still further.

Company Chairman, Frank Bristow says ‘Bristows’ is enjoying reviving the production of sweets made using traditional recipes, some of which are over 100 years old, “At the moment we’re all about cut and wrap fudge made with local clotted cream to cater for demand from visitors to the British seaside and tourist hot spots and the scent of hot vanilla wafting from the factory certainly has me feeling nostalgic.”

The company may be all about reviving tradition but it also has a brand new website, www.bristowsofdevon.com that profiles the range. There are already 36+ flavours of sweets available in bulk jars and bags, classic Tuckers brand bags of sweets priced to sell at just £1 and the traditional and chewy bonbons the company is well known for – including the very latest on-trend flavours: blue raspberry sours, bubblegum, rhubarb and custard and strawberry milkshake.

Managing Director Robert Whittleston says the company has had tremendous interest from home and abroad and has already sent its first consignment to the US, “The energy, enthusiasm and creativity of our workforce is just incredible. Everyone is pulling together to ensure that this is a business that really packs a punch and with all the new equipment in place and investment in the fabric of the building we have everything we need to produce great products for our customers and grow our brands.”

Robert says there will be much more innovation to come, with high quality products in-line with current consumer trends.

About Bristows of Devon and original artisan confectionery

Bristows of Devon has a long history of making confectionery in the town of Crediton in Devon. It was formed in 1932 but has had connections to sweet makers in the town for over 100 years. Bristows operated under variety of incarnations before its assets were acquired by the Paramount Retail Group in 2017 and restored to operation as Bristows of Devon. Since that time it has been under new management and now employs 29 people. As well as producing products under its Bristows, Tuckers and Pollards brands, the company makes own-label products for the retail and wholesale market in the UK and internationally. Through its export partners, Bristows of Devon has the capability to supply its products in 32 countries.

The company makes cut and wrap toffee and fudge, bon bons and boiled sweets. It is the only company in the world that produces a dual coloured bon bon and the only UK supplier of toffee centred bon bons. It also makes sugar-free confectionery and various ‘free-from’ sweets to meet customer needs.
