JOHNNY MAFIA: Post-Garage-Punk Racket Play The Great Escape Festival in Brighton

JOHNNY MAFIA have long been high rollers in the burgeoning post-garage punk rackets gripping the country of France over the last few years; high-energy explosive acts like The Pyschotic Monks, The Scaners, and Les Lullies have been burning up stages across Europe and USA with a vengeance, adding their craft to the long list of fine French exports suited to the more cultivated of music connoisseur.

Appearing 09/05 and  11/05 at The Great Escape  Festival – Brighton

The group hail from Sens, Burgundy (which is known more for it’s wheat and cereal production than rock ‘n’ roll) and bring a young, snotty, explosive and ferociously fun energy that drives audiences into a near-frenzy. Inspired by classics like The Ramones, TRex, and The Clash, they also draw heavily on contemporary acts like Ty Segall, Jay Reatard, and Wavves. With their signature reverb-soaked slap-backed fuzzed out sonic attack, Johnny Mafia embodies punk attitudes and spirit of past and present with a firm foothold into their bright future as a young band ready to conquer the wider world of rock ‘n’ roll.

Johnny Mafia have established their reputation above all else on stage and over the last four years, the band have been a featured attraction across festivals ; Festival Printemps de Bourges (FR) in 2014, Festival Les Eurockéennes de Belfort (FR) and Hipsville Fest (UK) in 2017 and were recognised with a laureat du FAIR.

The band recorded their  sophomore album "Princes de l'Amour" with producer Jim Diamond  (Released in November 2018) on London's Dirty Water Records

RECENT PRESS

"Cut in the rough with the same energy as usual, Princes of Love, the new album of Johnny Mafia, promises pure moments of garage ecstasy, like "Crystal Clear", first extract unveiled here in exclusivity: with its thick and saturated guitars, the title denotes as a taming of the furious madness Johnny Mafia, whose members will certainly not fail to converse frantically live as they are used to - but with finesse and fingering this time". ROLLING STONE FRANCE

"Johnny Mafia is the most watched French band on the international scene. And he didn't disappoint anyone. His new album, Prince de l'Amour, is a concentrate of all the best Californian music in recent years. All the tracks are absolute hits, Johnny Mafia passes over us like a pickup truck passes over crushed beer cans. The pressure is mounting for Johnny Mafia, perhaps it is the band on which the public is forging the most hope of all this ranking." STILL IN ROCK

"This French band is raw! They're propelled by a combustible energy, taking the hooks of T-Rex and building that on top of a shrieking garage rock platform. "Ride" is indicative of their latest work- it's a two and half minute charge, buzzing with distortion and blasting apart at the seams"  PUNK NEWS (US)

"French band Johnny Mafia’s sophomore LP, Princes de l’Amour, features punky vocals paired with catchy, fuzzed-out guitars and a grungy low-end, for a sound that’s reminiscent of classic acts like The Ramones and The Clash along with contemporaries like Ty Segall and Wavves. The band’s snotty, explosive, and ferociously fun songs embody a punk spirit of both the past and present "  NEW NOISE MAGAZINE (US)

"Hailing from Sens, France — a part of the world more known for its wheat and cereal production than in-your-face rock music. The band completed their first-ever North American tour last month, making an appearance at the prestigious FME Festival in Quebec, and has established their reputation as an exciting live band, sharing stages with acts like Parquet Courts, Flat Worms, and Boss Hog"  WITH GUITARS (UK)

"France’s electrifying garage-rockers Johnny Mafia distil their riotous sound down onto their debut album, Princes de l’Amour, and produce a fantastic slab of post-punk garage. Elsewhere there is a more urgent cranked up grunge touch to their songs. Crystal Clear is Nirvana’s Aneurysm for the modern garage generation, but the following Ride is the song that really hones their psyched attack, crossing Cobain with QOTSA and dropping in at the same time the crazed freakouts of Jay Reatard"  LOURDER THAN WAR (UK)

"There is a definite renaissance going on right now over in the underground garage rock scene in France, and Johnny Mafia are one of the bands leading the charge. The last couple of years have seen them start to rise up to become one of the hottest bands in the burgeoning scene".PUNK GLOBE US
