THE CAVEMEN came over to London from their native Auckland, New Zealand – “because those rednecks there wanted to lynch us” – with the aim of simply going hell for leather. And they have indeed hit the ground running, with two tours of Spain (and another one being planned), a tour around the Netherlands and a prestigious festival slot to boot, alongside tearing up the 40 of Years of Punk festival in London last month, plus a series of crazed live gigs around the UK. They are on fire! With three singles this summer and a new LP in the works, they’re now all living together in a London house where a Monkees inspired movie (well, maybe a video) will be filmed soon.

The Cavemen have been described as looking like “a cross between the Gun Club and the Cramps” with a sound that’s “a crossbreed between GG Allin and the Dwarves and a slew of other degenerate lo-fi punk groops”... “four stone age cretins who live and bleed for rock’n’roll. Everything in their performance screams of frustration, anger and a furious energy that makes it a true rock’n’roll experience.”

Another album review reads says, “LA punk crashing into surf rock with some degree of early rhythm’n’blues energy that makes this into a memorable piece of cave art... a darkness, sensuality and danger that you can’t fake!”

The Irish Times recently penned, "There's pretty much a racket to suit every form of deviancy, from the sex, drugs and punk rock self-abasement of Rock N Roll."

Their self-titled debut (on killer NZ label, 1:12 Records and available in toxic green and crystal clear vinyl and now released digitally by Dirty Water Records) features plenty of greasy riffs, uncouth howling, and road-rash-raw garage punk. Think a dose of Dead Moon, with a little of the Cramps and The Stooges, and then throw on a whole heap of vintage trash punk debauchery. That’s essentially The Cavemen. It’s sex, drugs, and rock & roll, lo-fi and punk as f*ck.

Other people can celebrate 40 years of punk rock as much as they like, but punk rock never went away; it’s still here and it’s here in The Cavemen, as fresh as it were 1977 again. This is punk rock the way it’s supposed to be – no new wave or lame pop influences here – just prime fucked up rock’n’roll with all the right influences from rock’n’roll’s glorious past.

The Cavemen channel everything from the Ramones to Elvis on stage. This ain’t sophisticated or remotely complex. But it is one of those wonderful loose-nut records that reminds you that life is short. And when life is not being nasty as hell it’s simply dull as ditch water. So you might as well crank that volume knob to 11 and get busy making your own filthy fun before you die in some tediously mundane fashion. So catch ’em before evolution does.
