Teacher becomes student again

Torben Stamer has set his sights on navigation training. It will be used at ESVAGT.

It was the realisation of a childhood dream that lead trained teacher, Torben Stamer aged 40, to swap sides in the classroom and join Svendborg Søfartsskole (Svendborg Maritime College) as a student. His study time intensified when he came to ESVAGT:

“ESVAGT has a very strong culture and desire to teach others. All my colleagues on board ship, from engine room to bridge, were keen to teach me as much as possible. Not only about the vessel and tasks on board but also about ESVAGT’s way of doing things,” says Torben Stamer.

He is currently at Marstal Navigationsskole (Marstal Navigation College) to further qualify as navigator; first as home-trade master and later as master. This was an ambition he voiced early on and it was well-received in the shipping company and by his colleagues.

“I definitely feel that my wish to train further has been reciprocated. Many of those at the college are from ESVAGT and have been trained by dedicated colleagues in the shipping company. For me, it has been inspiring and has contributed to my desire to continue my education and then return to ESVAGT,” says Torben Stamer.

Although technically speaking he is not part of the fleet when he is at college, ESVAGT is never far away:

“I am given work in the holidays so I can keep up my sailing hours and earn a wage. The connection I have with colleagues is still there. It means a great deal to know that the shipping company also expects me to return to them afterwards. I definitely feel like part of the fleet – I am just away on a slightly longer training course,” says Torben Stamer.
