West Gamma 25 years on: Facts, interviews, etc.

West Gamma

Whilst being towed from the Norwegian sector, the accommodation platform, West Gamma, was hit by a violent storm on the 20th of August 1990.

The storm developed, generating waves over ten metres high and seriously damaging the platform. At 3 a.m. on the 21st of August, the commander in chief of the platform gave the order to evacuate.

Bound together in groups of five or six, the 49 crew members jumped into the pitch black sea.

Every crew member of the West Gamma was saved – most of them by far by ESVAGT: 44 of the 49 crew members were rescued by Fast Rescue Boats (FRB) from the ‘Esvagt Omega’ and ‘Protector’. ESVAGT also saved two crew members from a sinking FRB launched from the ‘Normand Drott’, the Norwegian tug boat that assisted the rescue operation.

The ‘Esvagt Omega’ rescued 30 people and the ‘Protector’ rescued 16. The other 5 were rescued by the ‘Strilhawk’ (4) and the ‘Normand Drott’ (1).
