Media Weekly - Keep calm and party on

Even in the face of adversity we are, without a doubt, a nation that just gets on with things. Whether you saw the stone-cold face of Tony Blair at the Levenson enquiry as someone burst through the door, or saw how Jessica Ennis laughed-off the fact that she was labelled ‘fat’ by an Olympic Commission member, little fazes us. Then again, however hairy things get living in Britain, we don’t get much sheep rain here.

But how sensible are we, as a country? We’re certainly big on health and safety, as this week brought us more tales of banned bunting and discussions began on whether we should have alcohol sensors in every car. Of course, there are always two sides to every argument but it’s perhaps a little hard not to feel the odds and the name on his birth certificate are stacked against Professor Nutt, not to mention some of his more contentious historical remarks.

And it’s been a hard week to ignore the weight of history. Jeremy Hunt certainly found it coming back to haunt him while drum n bass musician, actor, artist and all round nice guy, Goldie, was inspired to make a little piece of his own for the Queen’s Jubilee. And while a million people plan to come to London for the party of a lifetime, millions more are taking the opportunity and long weekend to jet off abroad.

@mrjohnofarrell Congratulations to Queen Elizabeth II on being confirmed as 'Official Monarch of London 2012'
