Media Weekly - Storm in a B(Sky)B cup

It’s been another revealing week at the Leveson enquiry with a triumvirate of big hitters taking to the stand. Cameron, Osborne and Brown all waxed lyrical to the beleaguered QC Jay this week. Brown accused the Murdochs of ‘breathtaking arrogance’ over the decision to run his son’s medical condition on the front of The Sun.

Meanwhile David Cameron managed to charm his way through an otherwise uncomfortable session whose light relief came from the rather explicit text Rebecca Brooks had sent him. Earlier, his pal Gideon had got off pretty lightly as he trashed the idea of a BSkyB conspiracy though it was a different story when a protestor passed him a rather useful tool for navigating the economy at a later City event.

From one sparring match to another, Spanish supremo Rafael Nadal finally achieved his Magnificent Seven when he beat long-time thorn in his side Nole Djokovic in the sodden French Open final on Monday. But there was to be no rest for the tennis contingent as the Wimbledon warm-up Queen’s tournament started immediately after. Or it would have, if this pesky rain hadn’t ruined everything.

Ah the weather. It wouldn’t feel quite right to omit it as Media Weekly enters its Summer months. In typically low-key fashion the Mail has warned us to batten down the hatches and prepare for the greatest storm in the Met Office’s history this weekend.

Talking of storms, this time in a teacup, much has been made of the current Twitter spat between the actress who is currently playing Christine in Phantom of the Opera and a theatregoer who ‘naively’ thought she wasn’t been monitored/stalked by Sofia as she critiqued her performance. She should know, she’s seen it 80 times. The actress’ constant accusations of bullying eventually led @SHkiyolove to remark that the tables at least - if not the other cheek - had been turned. Elsewhere a Bengali violinist was having a similarly tough old time in Tower Hamlets, after the council inadvertently replaced his name in a festival programme with the word ‘bal’, ‘pubic hair’ in Bengali.

Tweet of the week: @JohnPrescott in response to the news that Cameron left his daughter in a pub: “Cameron's done worse. He once left Nick Clegg....in charge of the country. #problemfamilies.”
