Curtains rise on panto season

It's that time of year again, with the curtains rising on panto season around the region, and there are some great shows to be seen.

Getting to your nearest pantomime couldn't be easier with us, so we've put together a guide of what's on offer.


Tyne & Wear


Aladdin @ Sunderland Empire - until Sunday 3 January

The most mystical pantomime of all time, Aladdin, flies in on a magic carpet to the Sunderland Empire this Christmas with a sparkling cast!


Dick Whittington @ Theatre Royal, Newcastle upon Tyne - until Sunday 17 January

Joining the panto legends Danny Adams, Clive Webb and Chris Hayward will be a quadruple of sensational North East talent - Charlie Hardwick (Emmerdale's Val Pollard) as Spirit of the Tyne, Pete Peverley (The Bobby Thompson Story, RSC) as Dick's Cat, legendary panto villain Steve Arnott as dastardly King Rat and Jarrow lassie and West End star Alice Stokoe as Alice Fitzfenwick.


Aladdin @ Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle upon Tyne - until Wednesday 30 December

A magic carpet ride across the sea to magical Eastern lands in a tale of rags-to-riches, good versus evil, love conquers all and huge piles of washing…


Alice in Wonderland @ Customs House, South Shields - until Saturday 9 January

The ‘Little Panto with the Big Heart’ has returned with a trip down the rabbit hole with festive treat, Alice in Wonderland.


County Durham


Cinderella @ Gala Theatre, Durham - until Sunday 3 January

Enchanting rags-to-riches story of Cinderella. With ball gowns, glass slippers and suprises, will it be a fairytale ending? Mayhem, magic and live music!


Jack & The Beanstalk @ Empire Theatre, Consett - until 31 December

Visit the enchanting woodland village of 'Uptown Fun' for magic, hilarious characters and sparkling costumes.


Beauty and the Beast @ Empire Theatre, Consett - Monday 18 until Saturday 23 January

CBS Theatre Group presents this fun-filled, beloved fairytale.


Robinson Crusoe and the Caribbean Pirates @ Park View Theatre, Chester-le-Street - Thursday 14 until Sunday 17 January

Dryburn Theatrical Workshop brings you adventure, laughs and swashbuckling pirates.



Northumberland


The Legend of King Arthur @ Queen's Hall Arts Centre, Hexham - until Monday 28 December

Prepare for magic, music and mirth as the ‘boy who would be king’ pulls the sword from the stone. Cheer for your favourite jousting knight of the round table, admire the gutsy Lady Guinevere as she reveals her strength and skills, and gasp at the magic Merlin as he controls the twists and turns of this classic English legend.
