Fareham burglar sentenced to four and a half years in prison.

A twenty-two year-old man has been sent to prison following three burglaries in Fareham earlier this year.

Luke Jordan Bews of Bishopsfield Road in Fareham admitted break-ins on Hillson Drive and Fareham Park Road in the early hours of Monday 25 March 2019 at Portsmouth Magistrates Court on 10 April.

On Friday 10 May he was sentenced to a total of four and a half years in prison at Portsmouth Crown Court.

At around 1:55am on Monday 25 March a woman aged in her twenties heard a car outside her home on Hillson Drive. When she looked out of her window she saw that her car lights were on and that the car had been driven into the front of her house. The man inside her car ran off after she opened her front door. Electronic items taken from inside the house were found in the vehicle, £30 in cash and a set of keys were taken by the man.

At around 2:45am on the same morning someone broke in to a house of Fareham Park Road. Keys were stolen and vehicles searched.

At 4:50am a man heard a crashing noise coming from a driveway on Fareham Park Road. A Ford Fiesta, keys, an engagement ring, and cash had been stolen from a flat.

Keys stolen from the first two burglaries were later found by a member of the public on a nearby bridleway, linking these reports. The victim from Hillson Drive provided officers with a detailed description of the man she saw and the Ford Fiesta taken from Fareham Park Road was later recovered. Luke Jordan Bews was subsequently arrested and charged with all three burglaries.

Investigating officer PC Charlotte Pocock said: “I’d like to thank Bew’s victims who helped us to build this case alongside detailed CCTV enquiries carried out in the area.

“Residential burglary offences can have a dramatic impact on victims, especially if items of sentimental value are taken. I’m glad that this sentence reflects the seriousness of Bew’s offending”.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind people of the following crime prevention advice:

• Shut all windows and lock them when you are not using the room, at night, and when you leave your property
• Lock all front and rear doors at night and when you are out. If you have a UPVC door with a multi-point lock ensure you lift the handle and lock it with the key.
• Put all car keys and other keys out of sight and not in reach of windows and letterboxes. It doesn't take much for the keys to be hooked through the letterbox.
• Leave a light on so your home looks occupied if you are going out for the evening. If you head out while it is still daylight and won't be back till after dark then a timer switches (available from most DIY stores) can be useful in turning your lights, radios and other appliances on at a set time before you get back.
• Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property.
• Do not leave ladders and garden tools in your garden; lock them away in your shed.
• Have an intruder alarm system installed by an approved contractor. Ensure a visible alarm box is attached to the outside of your home. Also consider fitting security lighting.
• Use door chains and spy holes to give you extra security if someone knocks on your door. Never be afraid to turn people away. If you have concerns about anyone who has come to your door call the police.
