London Luton Airport raises £2,500 during Macmillan take over

London Luton Airport (LLA) raised over £2,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support, its charity partner, in September.

The charity’s ‘takeover’ month at the airport saw staff and passengers participate in the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’, while pupils from Stopsley High School held collections in the terminal, and staff competed against each other in gruelling firefighter drills.

All the funds raised will go towards Macmillan’s Bedfordshire Grants programme, which helps those affected by cancer, as well as their families and carers. Macmillan research shows that four in five (83%) people are, on average, £570 a month worse off as a result of a cancer diagnosis[i] and the charity has seen increasing demand for grants in the Three Counties area in recent years.

The money raised in September, and throughout the two-year partnership, will provide local people with these vital grants, which will help pay for necessities such as clothing, heating bills and transportation to and from hospital.

Supporting local charities and organisations is a core focus of LLA’s Community Engagement Strategy, which focuses on helping local communities, protecting the environment and contributing to economic growth in the region.

Caron Hooper, Community Relations Executive at LLA, said: “September was a fantastic month for our charity partnership with Macmillan, and we are grateful to all our staff and passengers who contributed to the ‘takeover’. Supporting the local community is important to everyone at LLA, and the charity partnership is just one of the ways we aim to make a positive impact.”

Richard Quaife, Corporate Partnership Manager at Macmillan said: “We would like to thank everyone involved who walked, crawled, baked or donated towards Macmillan Cancer Support. The money raised will go towards our Bedfordshire Macmillan Grants programme which will help reduce the financial impact of a cancer diagnosis and allow people with the disease to live life as fully as they can.”

We do not require a corporate website in the initial release, but this may be a future requirement.

[i] Research commissioned by Macmillan Cancer Support, carried out by researchers from the University of Bristol Personal Finance Research Centre in partnership with TNS BMRB, and part-funded by our partner The RBS Group. Figures based on a postal survey of 1,610 adults with a cancer diagnosis, recruited from a database of callers to the Macmillan Support Line and visitors to a sample of Macmillan Information and Support Centres located in hospitals across the UK. The majority (95%) had received cancer treatment within the last six months. Fieldwork took place between August and October 2012. Results were weighted to be representative of all people with a cancer diagnosis in the UK by age, gender, cancer type and country of residence.
