Press release -

First Sugarwise Certified Recipe Book launches in Tesco, Sainsbury's and WHSmith on Friday 28th July

EMBARGOED TO FRIDAY 28TH JULY 0.01. PLEASE RESPECT THE EMBARGO

A recipe book designed to help people follow World Health Organization guidelines on sugar launches into major retailers across the UK on 28th July. This is the first time recipes have been independently certified by Sugarwise, the international certification authority for sugar claims on food and drink. To make the grade recipes must be low in "free" sugars including honey and juice.

The recipe book "Sugar Free", published by Aceville Publications includes expert advice from Cambridge University scientists on controversial sugar topics, and provides a clear and reliable source for reducing added or "free" sugar intake. Cambridge University's obesity expert Dr Giles Yeo is one of the featured authors in the publication that also has recipes from Deliciously Ella, Davina McCall, Phil Vickery and The Hairy Bikers.

The book tackles some of the most hotly debated sugar topics such as the effects of sweeteners and the real health implications of ‘natural’ sugar alternatives like agave and honey. Experts including Registered Dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine, CEO of the Oral Health Foundation Dr Nigel Carter, and Public health professor at the University of Texas Dr Jim Painter tackle these topics and more.

Sweeteners such as coconut sugar have become fashionable alternatives to traditional white table sugar in recent years, but the book reveals how these are almost as high in the damaging "free sugars" that are linked to obesity, and that the World Health Organisation wants us all to limit.

This shocking revelation means that the usual alternatives people might turn to are almost, if not just as bad as regular refined sugar. So what should we use instead? Surprising store cupboard basics such as raisins and bananas can be used to add sweetness, and there are calorie, sugar and carbohydrate free options that may even have health benefits.

Easy-to-follow recipes include turkey korma, chocolate cheesecake and other sugar free show stoppers. Low-carb and low-fat recipes are also featured to cater for all preferences.

The publication provides shopping tips and tricks, along with smart swaps from every-day high sugar products to new sugar-savvy alternatives. For example, which supermarket own label has a solid bar of smooth milk chocolate with no added sugar? Which brands of soy sauce don't add the white stuff? Alongside all this, simple tips on how to curb cravings, balance blood sugar levels and what to look for on product labels make the recipe book a go-to-guide for living a sugar free life.

While everyone knows they should limit the amount of added sugar they consume, there is now - for the very first time - a reliable guide for how to do it every day.

Quotations:

Holly Philipps, Head of Digital Transformation at Sugarwise

"It's challenging to communicate what free sugars are and explain the kinds of things people can make that will help them meet the public health guidelines on sugar. It's all so confusing. We'd like to thank the publisher Aceville Publications, for having the foresight to work with Sugarwise in making this publication the first of its kind, While everyone knows they should limit the amount of added sugar they consume, for the very first time there is now a reliable guide for reducing free sugar intake”

Rend Platings, Sugarwise Founder and Mum:"I’d rather give my 3 year old daughter calorie free sweeteners than sugar, or even honey and agave. I know that if I give her something like stevia, and mix that into her yoghurt or use it in a dessert it won’t cause her any problems, such as with her teeth, it won’t make her obese, it won’t make her bounce off the walls. I hope that people can become more accepting of sweeteners like this, because they could provide important ammunition in the war against sugar. We’ve got to be rational and scientific.”

Dr Giles Yeo, Cambridge University Geneticist, expert on obesity and Sugarwise Trustee, commenting on specific sweeteners in the book says: “These sweeteners have all been repeatedly tested and found to be safe by the EU and UK food standards authorities, and should be a part of the strategy to reduce sugar consumption.”

Nichola Ludlam-Raine, health blogger at nicsnutrition.com and Sugarwise's Registered Dietitian: (In the book) "I hope that the message gets through to consumers that 'refined sugar free' is not a health claim, and to look for the Sugarwise logo instead."

The recipe book "Sugar Free" launches on Friday 28th July in Tesco, Sainsbury’s and WHSmith. It is published by Aceville,

About Sugarwise:

Sugarwise is the international certification authority for sugar claims made by food and drink manufacturers. Sugarwise independently verifies and tests products which make sugar claims against sugar standards. The Sugarwise marque on product packaging guarantees it to be low in the sugars or sweeteners that should be limited in diets.

Sugarwise standards reference the World Health Organisation’s guidelines which state that no more than 5% of calorie intake should come from free sugars. Free sugars are sugars added to food as well as the sugars found in honey, fruit juice, maple and other syrups.

Sugarwise’s certification work is part of its mission to make low sugar choices more available to consumers.
