MOTHER WANTS TO MAKE IT EASIER TO BUY LOW SUGAR FOOD AND DRINK WITH INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION SCHEME

A pioneering mother launches international sugar certification scheme “Level”, to provide clear labelling of the sugar content of food and drink products.

The scheme will work with manufacturers to promote low sugar products, and similar to Fairtrade certification, help customers quickly identify them, and provide reformulation advice where needed.

“I’d like my daughter to have a longer life than me. For the first time, because of diet, experts say she will have a shorter life. I will not just accept that.” - Rend Platings, Founder of Level International Limited

In 2012, leading market research firm Mintel asked consumers what they most want to avoid in food. Sugar and added sugar topped the listed by a wide margin. The shock recommendation for sugar levels by the World Health Organization in just March this year, is only set to increase the number of people looking to reduce their sugar intake. This will boost demand for clearly labelled products, with sugar levels independently certified.

“This is a great way to positively position your brand because sugar reduction and clear labelling are both current market trends.”
