Residents invited to apply for funding to celebrate VE Day anniversary
Community groups across Mid and East Antrim have been invited to apply for grant funding from Council to celebrate Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
This year’s May Bank Holiday will move from Monday 4 to Friday 8 to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
Council is offering grants to help constituted groups within the Borough to celebrate the hugely significant anniversary, with anything from small community events to medium celebrations considered for funding.
For small events with up to 500 people, Council is offering 75% funding up to a maximum of £1,000.
Medium-sized events can receive 50% of funding up to a maximum of £2,500.
Events must take place between 1 May to 11 May 2020.
Mid and East Antrim Veterans Champion, Alderman John Carson, said: “We’re proud to be able to allocate specific funding for local groups to celebrate VE Day in 2020.
“This anniversary marks such a vital milestone in our history and I welcome Council’s commitment that it is remembered and celebrated as such."

Meanwhile, this year’s Friends’ Goodwill Music Festival kicks off with an action-packed day of free, family friendly activities to mark the anniversary of VE Day.
On Friday 8 May, Sandy Bay Playing fields will be transformed by the sights, sounds and colours of World War 2 vehicles, weapons and historical re-enactors, with War Years Remembered bringing VE Day to life for modern generations.
A kiddies’ funfair will be in operation, and families can avail of free car parking and an array of food wagons.
Other key attractions, entertainment and activities will be announced shortly.
