HIV in Kenya - Alice's journey

When Alice Achieng was pregnant with Okampo she found out she was HIV positive. Life took an unexpected turn for her, but she made it something very positive. Here is her story.

'When I was told that I was HIV+ I felt bitter and I thought about harming myself. I thought that was the end of my life.

'Then at the hospital Merlin told me that even if people are HIV+ they can live for 30 years. I attended the antenatal clinic regularly and I took my drugs. Okampo had to have a HIV test at six weeks and nine months and both results were negative. He is 17 months old now and very well.

'Merlin continued to help me since Okampo was born. They have taught me about nutrition and that even on a low income there are good things that you can get locally, like green vegetables, cassavas and fish.

'Even when I learnt to bath Okampo they came and visited me and gave me hygiene advice on how I can take of Okampo and myself.

'The support group has helped me because you get to speak to others and we share together. I see that my problems are not that big. Everyone there tells their own story.'

'When you are alone you just think about so many bad things but when you join a support group and share with others you feel that there is still life.

'Some people still do not know their HIV status. They say that if they know they are HIV+ they are going to hang themselves.

'I really mobilise other mamas and I tell them not to hide in their homes. It is better to go and know earlier, not to wait until the time you are very sick.

'I tell them, I am HIV+ and I have baby Okampo and he’s negative so whether you are pregnant or not to get tested. Now some are starting to get tested and accept their status.'
