Witness appeal following assault in Wood Street, Liverpool city centre

We’re appealing for witnesses following an assault in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of Sunday, 24 March.

At around 1.30am, two men were walking near Villa Romana on Wood Street when they passed a group of men and women. As they passed, they were assaulted by three men from the group resulting in them being left unconscious. They were taken to hospital for treatment to head injuries and are since recovering.

A 27-year-old man from Ellesmere Port was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault and has since been released under investigation.

CCTV and witness enquiries are ongoing and detectives are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Paul Speight said: “This was a nasty and unprovoked attack on two men who were simply visiting Liverpool for a night out.

“We know there were a significant amount of people in the area at the time of the incident and I would ask anyone with information to please come forward and help us find those responsible. CCTV and witness enquires are being carried out and I would ask anyone who may have been in the Wood Street area to please cast their minds back and let us know if you saw anything suspicious or witnessed the assault.”
