Moray in second place in recycling league table

Moray has climbed to second place in the Scottish league table for household recycling.

Last year Moray’s rate for recycling and composting was 57.4% - topped only by Angus on 59.2%.

They were among only 10 of Scotland’s 32 local authorities to achieve the 50% mark.

The previous year Moray was only fifth in the league table although for a number of years it has consistently been one of the best performers in terms of recycling household waste.

During 2015 households in Moray generated just over 50,000 tonnes of waste – nearly 29,000 tonnes of which went for recycling.

Councillor John Cowe, who chairs Moray Council’s economic development and infrastructure services committee, said: “I am delighted that Moray is maintaining its place among the top recycling areas in Scotland.

“Regulations on waste management and the costs associated within them are becoming more demanding as time goes on and it is important that we all play our part in diverting as much as we possibly can from landfill.

“To put the 29,000 tonnes into perspective, had that gone to landfill instead of recycling it would have cost the council nearly £2.5million at the current rate of landfill tax.”
