Dirty Water Records signs London's Lucy and the Rats: single released "Girl" b/w "Lose my Mind"

Lucy from the Ramones-influenced pop punk trio the Spazzys, is the ‘Lucy.’ The Spazzys have made headlines not only in Australia, where they come from, but across the globe.

It’s the summer of 2015. Lucy has been in London for a year and is bored of playing guitar at home by herself. She needs a band badly so she assembles together a bunch of deadbeats and outcasts from London’s punk rock underworld and starts rehearsing.

Manu, Mike and Joe, who were together in Michael Jackson, become the Rats. Why not? How could you mess up such simple songs? Lo and behold, the invention works! The melodies become power pop tunes and after a few rehearsals (if you could call it that) they start recording the songs. There is nobody quite like them; some have mentioned the Bangles, others Blondie, but neither is exactly right.

It is terribly difficult to sound fresh and new when every note, every chord, and every lyric have been played somewhere by someone. Lucy’s beautiful melodies and delicate vocals don’t just sit on top of a punk rock backbeat. The vocals and the instrumentation complement each other perfectly. “Girl” has a jangly, ‘60s sound to it, while “Lose My Mind” more of a ‘70s power pop feel a la the Beat or Blondie. Audiences love it. It took no time to find label interest. With the new records in their hands the band has a week in Spain in June with tours in Greece, Italy and South America on the horizon. Watch this space.

Past performers have included The White Stripes (voted by Q Magazine as one of the top 10 gigs of all time, Mojo one of the top 30 and Kerrang one of the top 100!), The Gories, NOBUNNY, Kid Congo Powers (from the Cramps), The Fleshtones, Billy Childish, Radio Birdman, The Dirtbombs, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, The 5.6.7.8's, The Horrors and The Brian Jonestown Massacre to name just a few. The club has also seen some original '60s performers, such as The Monks, ? and the Mysterians, Kim Fowley, Sky Saxon, GONN, Michael Davis of the MC5 and more grace its stage.
