Better onshore understanding of risk

A workshop has strengthened ESVAGT’s onshore organisation’s understanding of risk.

ESVAGT introduced its Risk Management Tool (RMT) to strengthen its common understanding of risk and risk awareness in work in 2014.

Green-Jakobsen, a consulting company that specialises in optimising maritime safety, arranged seminars that introduced the RMT for those working in the ESVAGT fleet. Their success with the fleet was why they were chosen to return to ESVAGT – this time to work with the land based organisation.

“We wanted to strengthen our common understanding of what work is like on board ship by bringing the land based organisation to the seminars,” says Jesper Møhring Madsen, HSEQ Manager for ESVAGT:

”When those of us who work onshore can understand the conditions crew members work in offshore, we can provide the support they need most. Risk perception varies from person to person and probably from job to job and we wanted to help increase our understanding of each other’s work areas,” says Jesper Møhring Madsen.

A second goal of the seminar was to give those working onshore a better understanding of how their work influences business related risks.

Incident investigation improved with the five why questions

Why did it go wrong? ESVAGT employees can now provide a better answer to that question after attending a course on investigating incidents.

The course was based on the 5 whys method – a technique perfectly suited to finding the root cause of a problem.

”What was the cause and how can we prevent it happening again? These are the thoughts we need to bear in mind when an incident occurs. When we know the root cause for something going wrong, we can prevent it reoccurring,” says Jesper Møhring Madsen, HSEQ Manager for ESVAGT:

“Seeking learning from doing lies deeply engrained in ESVAGT. An excellent example of this is our Fast Rescue Boats, which are constantly being adapted and adjusted so they adopt all the lessons learnt when we use them,” he says.

The 5 whys course will be followed up on during 2016.
