Stroke Association comments on the link between stroke and artificial sweeteners

Dr Shamim Quadir, Research Communications Manager at the Stroke Association said:

“There is currently conflicting evidence as to whether there is a link between soft drink consumption and stroke.

This US study has several limitations, and suggests artificially sweetened soft drinks are associated with stroke and dementia, but that soft drinks sweetened with sugar are not. On the contrary, other studies have suggested soft drinks sweetened with sugar may be linked to stroke.

“Whilst no link has shown soft drink consumption helps lead to stroke, the high levels of sugar in many soft drinks, ready meals and fast food can all contribute to weight gain.

“Everyone can take steps to lower their stroke risk with simple lifestyle changes, like eating a balanced diet, taking regular exercise and stopping smoking. If you have any concern about your risk of stroke, you should contact your GP.”
