Bromsgrove stroke survivor set to take part in charity fashion show

A stroke survivor from Bromsgrove will overcome the challenges faced after her stroke to take to the stage in an M&Co Charity Fashion Show in aid of the Bromsgrove Lions.

Mother of two Carol Brogan, 55 from Fairfield, had a stroke in May 2013, followed by a heart attack the following July. Before her stroke, Carol worked at her local post office but afterwards she was left with difficulties with memory, concentration and weakness in her right side, and she was unable to return to her role.

On Thursday 01 October, Carol will model clothes from Bromsgrove retailer M&Co in a fashion show held at the store, alongside other stroke survivors supported by the Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Centre in Bromsgrove. All funds raised through the show will go towards Bromsgrove Lions.

The Lions are supporters of the Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Centre, arranging trips and tickets for stroke survivors who attend sessions and activities at the centre as part of their recovery.

Carol said: “I’ve taken part in fashion shows a long time ago, but this is the first time I’ve done anything like this since I had my stroke. I’m a little nervous about the day but looking forward to taking part – I just hope I make my family proud.”

Johanne Hughes, Life After Stroke Centre Coordinator at the Stroke Association, said: “It’s wonderful to see Carol and our Life After Stroke Centre users getting involved with the fashion show. We’re very grateful to the store and Bromsgrove Lions for giving them the opportunity to take part. This is a great way for us to give something back to the Lions for all their continued support.Being involved with the show has helped to build Carol’s confidence and marks a real milestone in her recovery. She is a shining example of life after stroke.”

Keith Godwin, Bromsgrove Lions President, said: "Bromsgrove Lions Club are proud to be working with the Life After Stroke Centre, encouraging stroke survivors to be involved in community activities. The stroke survivors we meet at the centre have such a positive outlook on life and it is difficult sometimes to realise that they have experienced such a potentially life-changing trauma. Their modelling for our Charity Fashion Show with M&Co in Bromsgrove is yet another example of their outward looking attitude.”

The fashion show is taking place on Thursday 1st October at the M&Co Store, on the High Street in Bromsgrove. Guests should arrive at 7pm, with the show starting at 7.30pm. Tickets for the show cost £5 and are available in store.

Between 26 October and 01 November, the Stroke Association is calling on people to ‘Give a Hand’ and raise vital funds for the charity. To find out more, visit www.stroke.org.uk/giveahand
