Devon stroke survivor takes a Step Out for Stroke in Teignmouth
A local stroke survivor from Devon is set to take part in the Stroke Association’s Step out for Stroke event at the Seafront Promenade in Teignmouth, on Saturday 20 May 2017.
Sue McMartin, 51, from Paignton had a stroke in 2013. Sue had a spinal stroke which was caused by a disruption in the blood supply to her spinal cord. The stroke left Sue with part paralysis down the right side of her body, and a burning sensation called central post-stroke pain (also known as Dejerine Roussy Syndrome or central pain syndrome) down the right side of her body.
Sue said: “My stroke journey has been a constant battle, but thanks to the Stroke Association I’ve turned this incredibly negative experience into a positive one. After my stroke, the Stroke Association helped me come to terms with what had happened. I’ve recently become a Stroke Ambassador for the charity, and I’ve set up a local support group for younger stroke survivors in the area.
“Since having my stroke I find that walking is really exhausting and I have to use two walking sticks to help me. The Step out for Stroke event will be a challenge, but I am keen to raise as much money as I can for the Stroke Association, to help others in my situation and to give thanks for the support that I’ve received.”
Jen Robinson-Slater, Regional Fundraiser, at the Stroke Association, said: “Step out for Stroke is a fun walk that everyone can be part of, no matter what your age or fitness level. We’re hugely grateful to Sue for joining us for this year’s event.
“We’re inviting the whole community to come to this fun day out and help us make it an event to remember. Our Step Out for Stroke events mark a milestone for many stroke survivors taking part, and it’s an event that the whole family will enjoy. Everyone taking part will be joined by hundreds of people across the UK who are walking to raise vital funds for everyone affected by stroke.”
