Dukinfield stroke survivor set to host fun-filled community fundraiser

Hannah McDonald, a 25 year old stroke survivor from Dukinfield, is inviting the local community to join her on Saturday 01 August, when she’ll be raising vital funds for the Stroke Association.

Hannah is hosting a family friendly community day at Dukinfield Rugby Club from 2pm until late, where residents can enjoy a barbecue and performances from local singers and the Stroke Association’s Community Choir. Little ones can have fun on a bouncy castle and have their faces painted, while stalls will also sell crafts and homemade items to help raise funds.

Hannah had a stroke when she was just 20 years old. She was studying at the University of Leeds when she fell to the floor and was rushed to hospital, where it was found that a condition called Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM) had caused her stroke. Hannah’s stroke left her with communication and mobility problems.

Since her stroke, Hannah has regularly fundraised for the Stroke Association and was awarded a Highly Commended Life After Stroke Award from the charity last year, in recognition of her fundraising to support other stroke survivors. Hannah also volunteers for the Stroke Association’s service in Tameside, helping other stroke survivors with their recovery.

Hannah said: “I wanted to organise the fundraiser to help raise money but also awareness of stroke, and the fact it can happen to anyone at any age. Our last fundraising event at Dukinfield Rugby Club raised around £3,000 for the Stroke Association so I’d love to top that this year. I’m hoping we’ll have some sunshine and hope to see lots of people come out to support the day!”

Louise Lawless, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at the Stroke Association, said: “With around 152,000 strokes a year in the UK – that’s around one every three and a half minutes - it is vital that we have people like Hannah who can raise funds for people affected by stroke. We’re really grateful to her for organising the day and looking forward to enjoying all the entertainment! We hope to see lots of people from the local community come along on the day.”

To enter the event, people can buy a wristband for a minimum £2 donation. For more information about the event, contact Hannah on 07887 384263.
