Enfield grandson takes on a sporting challenge with a difference

From Archery to Yoga, Greg Bullen, 28, from Enfield, is taking on 100 different sports over 100 days to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association, a charity that helped his family in a very difficult time.

In 1998 Greg’s Nan Nia, had a devastating stroke whilst at home, which affected her speech and movement. Before her stroke, Nia had two mini strokes (also known as a TIA’s or transient ischaemic attacks), but unfortunately didn’t spot the signs of these.

According to the Stroke Association, if mini-strokes are treated in time, around 10,000 strokes could be prevented annually and the NHS and care services could save more than £200m.

With help from the Stroke Association and healthcare professionals, Greg’s Nan made a good recovery. Sadly, in 2010, Nia passed away.

Greg says, “I wanted to challenge myself to raise £5,000 for Stroke Association as a thank you to all the people who helped my Nan over the years. I wanted to support the charity to fund for further research into stroke, so that one day people who have a stroke won’t have to struggle with day to day tasks and communication like my Nan did. I now know how important it is for people to recognise the signs of both a TIA and a stroke, I hope that through this event I can raise the awareness of this.”

Greg will be taking on 100 sports including Sumo Wrestling, Kabaddi (Indian contact sport), Synchronised swimming, Parkour, Muggle Quidditch, Octopush (Underwater Hockey) and Ultimate Frisbee.

Ruth Dunkin, Regional Fundraiser from the Stroke Association said, “Every year there are approximately 152,000 strokes in the UK. That's one stroke every three and a half minutes. Stroke changes lives. It can have a huge effect on you and your family. We rely on people like Greg to help change lives and together we can conquer stroke.”
