Golf club raises over £5,000 for stroke charities

Members at Thornbury Golf club have raised a massive £5770.00 this year which has been donated to two stroke charities. The Captains’ charities for 2014 are The Stroke Association and The Thornbury & District Stroke Support Group.

The money was raised at various events through the year and the club also took the opportunity to raise awareness of stroke among its members.  The Stroke Association was invited to golf competitions and also ran a couple of ‘Know your blood pressure’ events, so members could check whether they were at risk of a stroke.

Anne Shepherd, Chairman of the local Support Group, thanked The Club for their fundraising which had been used to take a group of stroke survivors on holiday to a hotel in Ross-on-Wye, which was specially equipped for their needs.

Melissa Rimell, Regional Fundraiser for the Stroke Association, echoed Anne’s thanks and confirmed that the cheque would be used towards the on-going research into prevention of strokes plus the subsequent treatment of stroke survivors.

If you want to find out more about the Stroke Association, please visit www.stroke.org.uk.  The Thornbury and District Stroke Support Group meets weekly on a Thursday from 2pm at The Jubilee Hall in Alveston, to find out more please email tdstrokegroup@gmail.com.
