Kent stroke survivor takes a Step Out for Stroke in Capstone Park
A local stroke survivor from Tonbridge is set to take part in the Stroke Association’s Step Out for Stroke event in Capstone Park on Sunday 18 June.
Peter Latchford, 57, is taking part in the charity’s event alongside his wife Karen after surviving a life-changing stroke in 2013. Peter’s stroke left him with right sided weakness, as well as communication, sight and cognitive problems.
Peter said: “Every aspect of my life has been turned upside down. The road to recovery is a long and bumpy one, and is still ongoing.
“Throughout it all, I have always been determined to get back on my feet. The Stroke Association have been there for me from my early days in hospital, and have supported me and my family in a number of ways. Taking part in the Step Out is a thank you to the charity for all their support. My aim is to walk 100 metres on the day, I’m feeling excited about it all!”
Karen, Peter’s wife said: “When we asked Peter if he wanted to take part in the Step out for Stroke, he was really up for the challenge. We’ve been out practicing walking as his mobility has been affected, but he’s making huge improvements. Our sons Matt and Ross will be joining us too, and we’ll all be supporting Peter to walk. I know this will be a challenge for him on the day, but he’s so determined to do it – even if it takes him all day!”
Becky Beard, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at the Stroke Association, said: “Step out for Stroke is a fun walk that everyone can be part of, no matter what your age or fitness level. We’re hugely grateful to Peter and his family for joining this year’s event.
“We’re inviting the whole community to come to this fun day out and help us make it an event to remember. Our Step Out for Stroke events mark a milestone for many stroke survivors taking part, and it’s an event that the whole family will enjoy. Everyone taking part will be joined by hundreds of people across the UK who are walking to raise vital funds for everyone affected by stroke.”
