Kirkby-in-Ashfield teacher takes on 12 half marathons in 12 months
A teacher from Kirkby-in-Ashfield is gearing up to take on 12 half marathons in 12 months to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association.
Nicholas Green, 22, has set himself the challenge to complete more than 157 miles over the next year, after his grandmother, Ann, had a stroke five years ago.
Nicholas said: “At the time of my gran’s stroke, I remember thinking that she was never going to be the same again. However, thanks to the amazing work of the Stroke Association and the NHS, she has made a good recovery. She still has problems with her right arm but she was very lucky. However, her close friend was not so lucky and was left with more serious long-term effects.”
Nicholas will kick-start his series of events with the Coventry Half Marathon on Sunday 28 February, before taking on at least one half marathon a month until January 2017. He has lined up events in Stafford, Sheffield, Milton Keynes and Derby over the coming year, with his final race taking place in York.
He added: “Training is going really well at the moment and I’m getting close to a personal best in all of my longer training runs at the weekend. The next step now is to make the routes harder and push myself to hopefully be as prepared as possible come the start in February.”

With around 152,000 strokes a year in the UK – that’s around one every three and a half minutes – it’s vital that we have people like Nicholas who can raise funds for people affected by stroke.”
