Local teacher set to help conquer stroke with climbing challenge
A teacher from Ashton-Under-Lyne will run up and down Alphin Pike in Saddleworth non-stop for 24 hours on Friday 19 June, to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association.
Chris Webb, 34 from Mossley will complete the challenge from 7pm on Friday until 7pm on Saturday 20 June, when he’ll complete 2.8 miles and 900 feet of ascent and descent each lap. Chris is hoping to complete at least 25 laps over the course of the day.
Chris was inspired to take on the challenge for the Stroke Association as his wife Anne works as an Occupational Therapist for Tameside and Glossop NHS Community Stroke Team. Working closely with the Stroke Association, on a daily basis her team see the impact that stroke can have on survivors and their families.
Chris said: "I decided to do this to support the work of the Stroke Association to help families affected by stroke get the support they need.
“I’m also hoping to get the local community involved and inviting people to join me to run laps on the day. I’ll even be carrying my 18 month old daughter for a lap. For spectators there will be a cake sale and hopefully a good atmosphere so we'd love as many people from the local area to come along and help raise money for the Stroke Association, a very worthwhile cause.”
Louise Lawless, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at the Stroke Association, added: “With around 152,000 strokes a year in the UK – that’s around one every three and a half minutes - it is vital that we have people like Chris who can raise funds for people affected by stroke. We’re really grateful to him for taking on this unusual challenge and wish him the very best of luck.”
