Rainham mother takes on Resolution Run in memory of her son

Lorraine Schubert, 62, from Rainham, is taking on the Stroke Association’s Resolution Run on Sunday 2 April in memory of her son who had a stroke in 2011.

Just a month after his 18th birthday, Lorraine’s son Mark had a stroke. Mark began to make a slow and determined recovery, but sadly passed away in September 2011.

Lorraine will be joined on the day by a team of 30 family and friends, including her daughter Nichola who was just 25-years-old at the time of her brother’s stroke.

Lorraine said: “We’ve dubbed ourselves as ‘Team Mark’, and we will be out in force on Sunday to do everything we can to raise awareness and vital funds for the Stroke Association.

“As a family we’re constantly raising awareness of stroke. Far too many people still don’t seem to realise that a stroke can happen at any age. Mark was a fit and healthy 18-year-old and I never could have imagined something like this happening to him. As a family and as Team Mark, we always try to get the message home that strokes really do happen to anyone, and just how important it is for people to act FAST if they spot any stroke symptoms.

“My daughter Nichola has been my absolute rock through all of this. I’m so proud of her and know that Mark will be watching over us as we make it to the finish line.”

Lorraine and Nichola are preparing to complete the Stroke Association’s Resolution Run, alongside 300 other runners at Hyde Park on Sunday 2 April.

Emma Evans, Events Manager at the Stroke Association, said: “With around 1.2 million people across the UK living with the devastating impact of stroke, it is vital that we have people like Lorraine and Team Mark to raise funds and help us conquer stroke. We’re looking forward to cheering them on alongside our other participants as they make their way through the park.
