Spalding couple celebrate 50 years of marriage by raising funds for the Stroke Association
A Spalding couple have celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary by raising over £650 for the Stroke Association, after their son had a stroke.
Shirley and Albert Storey, both 80, invited guests at their 50th anniversary party to donate money to the charity, as their son Chris had a stroke at the age 47 in May 2015. Chris was supported by the Stroke Association throughout his recovery, initially while he was living in Leeds and then in Lincolnshire when he returned home.
Shirley said: “Chris had a major stroke which led to a devastating level of disability. We thought he might never be able to do simple things again. At the time, he couldn’t even swallow. But he’s astonished everyone with his recovery and returned to work in December last year. He does still struggle with his balance and gets more tired.
“The Stroke Association has been a huge help to Chris during his recovery and so we were inspired to raise funds for the charity. We’re so pleased we can use our Golden Wedding anniversary as an opportunity to help other families like ours get the support they need.
Shirley and Albert celebrated their wedding anniversary and both their 80th birthdays at Spalding Weston Village Hall, where they were joined by around 65 family and friends.
Shirley added: “We had a lovely evening with music and dancing, and we’re very grateful to everyone who donated money to the Stroke Association. We’re so pleased with the amount raised.”
Joanne Burr, Community and Events Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: “We’re extremely grateful to Shirley and Albert for supporting the Stroke Association. Without the efforts of fundraisers, we wouldn’t be able to support the 93,000 people in the East Midlands who are currently living with the devastating effects of stroke, as well as their families and carers.”
