St Bernard’s Open Gardens bloom for the Stroke Association
St Bernard’s Road Open Gardens Group has presented the Stroke Association with over £6,600 on Friday 28 July, after raising the record total at this year’s open gardens event.
Each year, the private gardens in the St Bernard’s Road section of the Olton Conservation Area are opened to the public to raise vital funds for charity. This year, residents chose to raise funds for the Stroke Association at the event held on Sunday 25 June.
The Victorian and Edwardian houses in St Bernard’s Road were planned with large gardens when they were built, perfect for gardening enthusiasts. This year 11 houses along the road opened their garden gates to welcome visitors and help raise money for the charity, which supports people living with the devastating impact of stroke and funds vital research.
Visitors to the event were able to enjoy spacious lawns, a colourful range of perennial plants, vegetable cultivation and mature trees. They could also buy a wide range of plants, enjoy refreshments and home-made cakes and even enjoy Pimms and live music in one of the gardens.
Celia Remington, Event Organiser, said: “Our group would like to thank all our sponsors, helpers and visitors who contributed to the success of the event’.”
Claire Weaver, Community and Events Fundraiser for the Stroke Association, joined members of the group to receive the funds raised.
Claire said: “With more than 100,000 strokes in the UK each year, it’s vital that we have people like the residents at St Bernard’s Road to help raise funds. We’re incredibly grateful to them all for choosing to support the Stroke Association. The fantastic amount raised will go a long way in helping to support people who are living with the effects of stroke and their families and carers, as well as help to prevent people from having a stroke.”
