Stroke survivor visits local warehouse team who raised thousands for charity

Colleagues at Well Pharmacy’s Healthcare Service Centre in Stoke-on-Trent got a surprise this week when stroke survivor Paul Bailey dropped by to personally thank them for raising over £17,000 for the Stroke Association.

Paul Bailey who lives locally, survived a stroke in August 2015 when he was aged 52. Now a volunteer for the Stroke Association, Paul visited the team on behalf of the charity.

Paul said: “I had a blood clot on the brain three years ago, which has left me with weakness on my right side and bladder complications as my brain keeps sending it signals that it’s full. This makes it difficult to do everyday tasks like preparing meals. I’m very lucky that my wife is an excellent cook!”

The money was raised through an array of challenges including shark diving, mud runs and a family fun day. The Stroke Association is Well Pharmacy’s official charity partner, and team’s efforts have also been recognised by their company who have awarded them the Charity Fundraiser of the Year Award.

Paul added: “The amount of money raised by the staff here is amazing. I was very happy to drop in and accept the donation on behalf of the Stroke Association, which will help the charity provide vital services, campaign for better stroke care and find better treatments so that stroke survivors like me can make the best possible recovery.”

Phil Stubbs, Senior Inventory, Quality and Compliance Manager at Well Pharmacy said: “Our team was delighted to be recognised by the company with the fundraising award. This year we have taken part in so many weird and wonderful fundraising activities and to raise £17,000 is a fantastic result. It was such a surprise for the team to meet Paul to understand first-hand how the money we have raised will help stroke survivors in the area.”

Maureen Speed, Support Coordinator for the Stroke Association, said: “We help tens of thousands of stroke survivors and their families through our range of services and free helpline, but we can only do this through the generosity of people like the team at Well Pharmacy. We’re incredibly grateful to them for taking on these amazing challenges and choosing to support the Stroke Association. The money they have raised will go a long way towards helping more stroke survivors like Paul to rebuild their lives.”
