Stroke survivors enjoy showcase of local support

Stroke survivors, volunteers, carers and organisations from Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale came together on Monday 23 March, to celebrate the support for stroke survivors in the area.

Organised by the Stroke Association at Castleton Community Centre, the event saw stroke survivors share their experiences of the charity’s Life After Stroke Services, while an exhibition of photography and artwork from the service was also displayed. The Stroke Association team also recognised the invaluable support of volunteers who help the service run in the area, presenting them with certificates.

The Stroke Association works in partnership with Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Clinical Commissioning Group to deliver the Life After Stroke Services.

Judith Moreland, Assistant Regional Manager at the Stroke Association said: “We provide practical advice, essential information and emotional support for stroke survivors and family members in Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale. The showcase was a great opportunity to celebrate the work being carried out in the area in partnership with local organisations, while hearing feedback from our service users about the support they’ve received.”

Terry Bloxsome from Middleton had a stroke in September 2013. His wife and carer Pat said, “The team from the Stroke Association visited Terry in hospital and have continued to support us throughout his recovery. They referred Terry to Link4Life in Rochdale where he attended several fitness courses, which have made a huge impact on his recovery, particularly building his confidence. It has also really helped to meet other stroke survivors who have been through a similar experience.

“It’s so important for the support from the neurological rehab team, physiotherapists and the Stroke Association to be linked together. It gives you real peace of mind to know they are there and we’re very grateful for all the support we’ve received.”

According to the Stroke Association there are around 14,600 strokes each year in the North West and over 157,370 people living with the effects of stroke. For more information about stroke, ring the Helpline on 0303 30 33 100 or visit www.stroke.org.uk.
