Surrey sisters cycle to fundraising success for the Stroke Association

Two sisters from Guildford have raised over £100,000 for the Stroke Association after cycling from London to Paris on Friday 26 May.

Lucy and Katie Trafford were inspired to take on the challenge after their mother Tina had a stroke last July and sadly passed away.

Lucy, 24, said: “Cycling from London to Paris has been on my bucket list for many years. The whole experience was incredible! People were cheering us on along the way and I felt so proud to be doing this for my mother. In total, there were 97 of us in the team, including our father, aunts, uncles and cousins. We dubbed ourselves as ‘Saddle for Stroke’ and had that printed on our t-shirts too.

“It did get emotional at times, but knowing that mother was looking down on us every step of the way was what got us through it.”

Katie, 21, said: “The Stroke Association is a charity very close to our hearts. Not a day goes by when we don’t think about our mother. We’re so grateful to all the generous people who donated, and especially to our family and friends who joined us on the day. Mother loved to cycle, and that’s why we took on this challenge. We covered over 200 miles over three days, which is unbelievable when we think about it!”

Becky Beard, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at the Stroke Association, said: “Katie, Lucy and their father Richard have raised an amazing amount to help people affected by stroke, and we’re so grateful Their incredible fundraising efforts will help us fund vital research and support for stroke survivors, as well as help to prevent people from having a stroke.

“Joining the family on the cycle myself, I know just how determined everyone was. It wasn’t the easiest of challenges, but Lucy and Katie were fantastic at keeping spirits high, and making sure everyone had the energy to keep on going.”
