Press release -

Twelve days of Christmas begins with the Stroke Association’s Festive Concert

The Stroke Association Carol concert on the 12th December 2014 will provide the perfect start to everyone’s Christmas celebrations.  The Carol Concert, which will feature the Sainsbury’s Choir, recently seen on a hit TV Show, will take place at All Saint’s Church in Mill Street Maidstone.

The National charity has organised the event to celebrate Christmas with their supporters and raise funds to help continue their vital work. Around 600 people have a stroke in Medway each year and over 3,700 are living with the effects of a stroke.  A stroke happens in an instant but its effects last a lifetime. The charity provides information support and advice for families as well as campaigning on their behalf and carrying out vital research.

This is set to be a magical evening and a great start to Christmas with performances from the Sainsbury’s Choir, and Madginford Primary School Choir, and readings from two young Stroke survivors, Amber Garland and Elizabeth Ashmore.

-  Elizabeth suffered a stroke a year ago when she was just 20. She was left paralysed down one side and was in hospital for 3 months learning to walk again.

-   Amber had multiple strokes aged 19 whilst at university. At first Amber could not speak or walk and had to spend two years in a residential neurological centre where she learned to do all of these things again. She has some weakness down one side and aphasia (communication difficulty) but this has not stopped her fundraising for the Stroke Association – including a sky dive! - and working hard to raise awareness of stroke amongst young people.

Sandra Field, Regional Head of Operations for the Stroke Association said “We’re looking forward to celebrating the countdown to Christmas with our stroke survivors and supporters. The funds raised from the evening will go into vital research and also be used to support stroke survivors and their families across the County.”

The evening starts at 6.30pm and doors open at 6pm. Following the service refreshments, including hot drinks and mince pies, will be served.

Tickets cost just £10 per person and include refreshments afterwards (£7.50 for concessions, including stroke survivors, their carers and under 16s. Under 5s go free)
