Tynemouth couple join Team Stroke at Paris Marathon
A young couple from Tynemouth are getting set to pound the streets of Paris to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association.
Lettings consultant Euan Stenhouse, 22, and Northumbria University undergraduate Elena Duffy, 20, will take on the Paris Marathon on Sunday 09 April. Together they’ll join 40,000 runners and take in some of the world's most iconic sights, including the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and Champs-Elysees.
Euan and Elena were inspired to take on the challenge after both of Euan’s grandfathers died following strokes.
Euan said: “My grandad, John Stenhouse, died two and a half years ago after a stroke and it was a really difficult time for our family. My other grandad, Arthur Cass, lived with the devastating impact of his stroke for ten years before he sadly passed away.
“Elena and I have already completed the Great North Run to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association, as it’s a charity that’s extremely close to our hearts. Training for the Paris Marathon is going well; we’re building up our training runs and can’t wait to take on the race itself.”
Euan and Elena will also host a fundraising Quiz Night on Friday 03 March at Tynemouth Golf Club on King Edward Road, to contribute to their fundraising target of £2,000. The event will begin at 7pm, with 4-6 people per team. It costs £40 per team to enter with food included. Contact Euan Stenhouse on 07760223033 or email euanstenhouse@googlemail.com to book a place.
Laura McMullin, Community and Events Fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: “Euan and Elena are truly going the extra mile for the Stroke Association, by not only taking part in the Paris Marathon but organising their fantastic fundraising Quiz Night in the lead up to the race. With around 1.2 million people across the UK living with the devastating impact of stroke it is vital that we have people like Euan and Elena to raise funds and help us conquer stroke and we’re very grateful for their support.”
