Wandsworth resident goes the extra mile for the Stroke Association

Chelsey Hickman, 25 from Wandsworth is taking on the Virgin Money London Marathon for the Stroke Association on Sunday 22 April 2018.

Chelsey was inspired to take on the marathon after her father had a stroke in 2015, at the age of 48.

Chelsey said: “I will never forget the morning when I took the call from my mum telling me that dad had had a stroke. I felt like my world had come crashing down around me – I knew about strokes, but could never imagine my dad having one.

“My parents have been so strong throughout this. Dad’s stroke has been the toughest challenge we’ve ever faced, but it’s definitely brought us closer as a family. Before his stroke, my dad was my best friend. Today though, he is my inspiration, my superhero, and the reason I strive to accomplish things I had only ever dreamed of achieving.

“Training has been hard, especially in this cold weather. But I keep coming back to the fact that a few achy joints is nothing compared to what my dad has been through, and I am sure that thought will help keep me going when the going gets tough on the big day.”

Emma Evans, Events Manager at the Stroke Association, said: “Around 1.2 million people in the UK are living with the devastating impact of stroke. We’re thrilled Chelsey is taking on this challenge to raise vital funds for the Stroke Association and we’re looking forward to cheering her on as she makes her way through London.

“Astroke can happen to anyone at any time and it turns lives upside down. With the support of people like Chelsey we can help more stroke survivors and their families rebuild their lives.”
