Press release -

Free Sew Recycled class is back

Due to popular demand, Recycle for Greater Manchester has partnered with Junk Shop to provide a free sewing skills class in Rochdale borough.

The Sew Recycled class aim to encourage Greater Manchester residents to get behind a sewing machine, pick up a needle and thread and get creative with their wardrobe.

As well as learning sewing skills, the classes promote the importance of donating and recycling their unwanted clothes and textiles instead of throwing them in the bin.

The sew recycled class will involve making a ‘sew-skilled’ bag for life - where attendees will learn ‘make do and mend’ skills including how to hem, applique, patch and much more.  Attendees can then put their new skills to the test and customise and upcycle their clothing and textiles with support from the Junk Shop experts.

The event takes place on Friday, November 28, from 2-5pm, in Rochdale Central Library at Number One Riverside.

Councillor Jacqui Beswick, Cabinet Member for Housing and the Environment at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “An average Greater Manchester household owns £4,000 worth of clothes, 30 per cent unworn in 12 months. Therefore, more and more clothes and textiles are being thrown away, most of which could be worn again.

“Sewing has had a real resurgence lately with programmes such as the Great British Sewing Bee encouraging us to make and reuse clothes to create amazing new items for our wardrobes, so an event like this will really help people learn some basic sewing skills.”

More than £140 million worth of clothing that gets binned ends up in landfill every year. Unwanted clothes and textiles too worn and torn for repair or donation can be recycled at the textile banks at 20 Recycling Centres across Greater Manchester.
