Recycling reaches new heights
Recycle for Greater Manchester and Rochdale Borough Council have partnered with Rochdale Borough wide Housing (RBH) to help residents and improve recycling at College Bank Flats.
Over the last year, Recycle for Greater Manchester and Rochdale Borough Council have been taking great steps in recycling, thanks to an innovative LIFE+ funded Up and Forward project. They are excited to be partnering with RBH, improving recycling facilities at College Bank Flats in Rochdale, known locally as 'The Seven Sisters'. Consultations were recently made with residents and RBH, discussing how recycling facilities could be improved at the flats.
All residents will receive two free reusable recycling bags - one for their paper and cardboard and the other for co-mingled waste, which includes glass jars plastic bottles and food and drink cans. The bags allow easy transportation of their recycling to the bins located outside the basement of each block of flats. Residents at Mitchell Hey, Dunkirk Rise and Tentercroft will also be given the opportunity to recycle their food waste. Kitchen caddies and compostable liners will allow residents to recycle their organic waste to the new brown bins which are located outside the ground floor or basement of their flats. A recycling information leaflet will also be provided to all residents and Recycle for Greater Manchester will be holding information stands at the flats to remind residents about the new recycling facilities.
Ros Martin, RBH Sustainability Coordinator, said: ‘RBH recognise the importance of recycling and think it is important to make recycling as easy as possible for our tenants, which is why we are pleased that College Bank was chosen for this pilot project.’
Councillor Jacqui Beswick, Cabinet Member for Housing and Environment at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “It is fantastic that all residents in the borough are being given the chance to recycle their waste and are being provided with the facilities to do so.”
Roll out of the new recycling facilities to residents in College Bank began in July and will continue throughout August.

The Up & Forward project looks at ways of encouraging residents to waste less and recycle more in currently hard to reach communities. The aim is to carry out a project that will demonstrate how improved communication and engagement can increase waste prevention and recycling in low performing urban areas.
The Up and Forward project is funded by the European Union EU funding stream Life +. LIFE is the EU’s financial instrument supporting environmental and nature conservation projects throughout the EU. Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) provides recycling and waste disposal services for 1,009,815 households in Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford. It handles around five per cent of England’s waste.
Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Limited (VLGM) is a joint venture company owned by Viridor, a subsidiary of Pennon Group PLC, and John Laing PLC, who have come together to deliver a 25 year Recycling and Waste Management Contract.
VLGM provides facilities and services to manage householders waste in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner. This involves the reception, treatment and disposal of waste to increase levels of recycling, composting and recovery and reduce waste sent to landfill.
