New Play Park Opens in Porthtowan

The youngsters, parents and grandparents of Porthtowan all gathered excitedly on Sunday 4th August for the opening of the eagerly-awaited, new and improved playground facilities next to the Unicorn pub in the village. Despite the weather being wet , spirits remained high and the event was well attended, with everyone keen to experience what  Schoolscapes Ltd had designed to entertain and delight those young ones seeking somewhere to spend their leisure time.

Visitors to Rosehill Lodges will undoubtedly be impressed at the new park, which offers young children an exciting, yet safe area in which to expend their energy. Close to the beach and located next to the Unicorn, there is plenty of space to ensure that parents can watch their children play in comfort. The play park is a very welcome addition to the local facilities and located in a prime spot, it is perfect for locals as well as the many visitors to the area who come to experience the fabulous surfing, walking and cycling to be found in Porthtowan.

The Play park was funded with £26,000 of 106 money – from local developers set aside for works within the community, after the successful application with the support of Cornwall Council and St Agnes Parish Council. Thanks to the superb design, the play park now boasts amongst other things:

·  a wooden and black Cornish pirate ship with slides,

·  tunnels and climbing ropes

·  a zip wire

·  swings

·  a cradle swing

·  balance beams

Those who helped to secure the funding for this venture said it was after lengthy consultation with local families that the decision was made to create a play park that maintained a natural look, has a mix of equipment that is more suited to a wider age range (1-12yrs) and that also caters for less able-bodied children.

Everyone in attendance was delighted and very impressed with the new play park that marks the beginning of the regeneration plans for Porthtowan.
