Nine SportsAid athletes up for BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Award

Later this week the winner of the BBC’s Young Sports Personality of the Year Award will be announced at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow where nine SportsAid athletes will be eagerly awaiting the result alongside some members of the SportsAid team who have been invited to the ceremony as guests of SSE.

Last year’s winner was SportsAid athlete Amber Hill who just weeks earlier had received the charity’s coveted One-to-Watch Award from Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, the charity’s Patron, at the SportsBall in London.

This year’s One-to-Watch Award winner, heptathlete Morgan Lake, is on the shortlist alongside eight other promising young athletes who have recently received support from SportsAid:

  1. Alicia Blagg (diving) – SportsAid Awards 2009 and 2010 (Yorkshire Forward)
  2. Bradley Neil (golf) – SportsAid Awards 2012 (Robertson Trust) and 2013 (Jaguary Academy of Sport)
  3. Erraid Davies (swimming) – SportsAid Award 2014 (Robertson Trust)
  4. Jade Jones (wheelchair racing) – SportsAid Awards 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 (ASDA)
  5. Morgan Lake (athletics) – SportsAid Awards 2013 and 2014 (Jaguar Academy of Sport)
  6. Nile Wilson (gymnastics) – SportsAid Awards 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 (ASDA)
  7. Rebeka Simon (kayaking) – SportsAid Award 2013 (Lloyds Bank Local Heroes)
  8. Rebekah Tiler (weightlifting) – SportsAid Award 2013 (SportsAid Y&H)
  9. Sophie Thornhill (para-cycling) – SportsAid Awards 2011, 2012 (Variety Club) and 2013 (Lloyds Bank Local Heroes)

The tenth young athlete on the shortlist is gymnast Claudia Fragapane.

In contention for the Sports Personality of the Year Award, meanwhile, are four other SportsAid athletes: Adam Peaty (swimming), Kelly Gallagher and Charlotte Evans (para skiing), and Lizzy Yarnold (skeleton).

The winners of both awards will be announced on Sunday evening live on BBC One.
