Broadcaster Hayley McQueen becomes SportsAid ambassador to help young athletes

TV presenter Hayley McQueen is helping to uncover what it takes for young athletes to become Olympic or Paralympic hopefuls as a new ambassador for SportsAid.

The award-winning sports broadcaster will be working with SportsAid to raise the profile of the next generation of British sports stars who receive financial support from the charity.

Hayley said, “I can’t wait to meet some of the athletes SportsAid helps. What they do is really inspiring and it would be fantastic if we could get more people behind them – especially with SportsAid’s 40th anniversary coming up in 2016.”

One of the 1,200 athletes SportsAid has helped this year is 17-year-old rower Lauren Rowles from Worcestershire who recently earned one of Great Britain’s first places at next year’s Paralympic Games in Rio.

Lauren said, “Without SportsAid many athletes like me would not be able to achieve their goals and dreams.”

Former SportsAid recipients who now work with the charity as ambassadors include swimmers Karen Pickering, Mark Foster and Sharron Davies, diver Leon Taylor, rowers Zac Purchase, Mark Hunter and Steve Williams, and Paralympic athlete Danny Crates. Eleven-time Paralympic champion Tanni Grey-Thompson is both an ambassador and a trustee for SportsAid.

The charity’s patron is Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge.

SportsAid’s chief’s executive Tim Lawler welcomed the news, saying, “This will make a big difference to SportsAid because Hayley will be helping us to tackle one of the biggest problems that young athletes face. The recognition they receive is often just as important as the financial support that SportsAid gives. She will be a great new member of the team.”

Other well-known SportsAid ambassadors include soprano Laura Wright, tennis star Laura Robson and Olympic open water swimmer Keri-Anne Payne.
